A new poll reveals a seismic shift in American political sentiment towards President Joe Biden’s ability to lead the nation.

According to the ABC News survey, a staggering 67% of respondents believe Biden should step aside and let someone else run for president. Even more striking, 62% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents share this view, signaling a crisis of confidence within his own base.

Regarding Republican candidate Donald Trump, the survey shows 50% of respondents believe he should step aside. However, only 16% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents expressed this opinion, a strong statement of party support for the former president despite his criminal conviction.

While Biden insists he’s staying in the race, the poll offers a glimmer of hope for Vice President Kamala Harris. In a hypothetical matchup, Harris leads Trump 49% to 46% among all adults, slightly outperforming Biden’s 46% to Trump’s 47%.

The timing of this poll comes on the heels of Biden’s lackluster debate performance against Trump last month and just as Senate Democrats reportedly prepare for a high-stakes meeting with senior Biden campaign officials.

Adding fuel to the fire, Senator Peter Welch became the first Democratic senator to publicly call for Biden to step aside in a Washington Post op-ed on Wednesday. This follows a Tuesday meeting where several Democratic senators, including Jon Tester, Sherrod Brown, and Michael Bennet, voiced serious concerns about Biden’s viability as a candidate.

With no formal nomination until late August, there’s still time for a change at the top of the Democratic ticket. However, it remains unclear who could successfully fill Biden’s shoes if he were to step down.
