A majority of Israelis believe a war with Hezbollah is inevitable, a recent survey by the Israel Democracy Institute shows.

The survey questioned both Jewish and Arab Israelis and found that 69% of them see a conflict on the horizon. The results showed that political leanings—center, right, or left—had minimal impact on this grim belief, indicating a rare consensus across the spectrum on the issue.

When asked who they would prefer to lead in a war, Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi emerged as the preferred choice, receiving a positive approval rating of 55%. He was followed by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant with 46% and Minister Benny Gantz, who secured a 37.5% trust rate. At the bottom came Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, with confidence ratings of 32% and 21.5%, respectively.

The war along Israel’s northern border is being fought in parallel with the more intense conflict in Gaza, which began after Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack. Now also in its sixth month, the confrontation with Hezbollah has seen near-daily exchanges. On Tuesday, anti-tank missiles were fired by Hezbollah at the IDF’s Mount Meron air traffic control base. The IDF reported no injuries and responded by shelling the launch site in southern Lebanon.
