While Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich claimed it contained “everything we need to win,” 54% of Israelis believe it will harm their personal finances. Only 7% expect any economic improvement. Two-thirds of respondents believe “political considerations” drove funding decisions, with many criticizing the NIS 3 billion cut to public sector workers’ salaries. Smotrich himself has become a focal point for discontent, with 68% rating his performance as “poor.”
Even Netanyahu’s base is fracturing, with just 51% of coalition voters expressing trust in the government they helped elect. But despite his soaring unpopularity, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister still polls competitively against most opposition figures.
When matched against current opposition leader Yair Lapid, Netanyahu maintained a 35% to 26% advantage, with a third of respondents rejecting both. Similar patterns emerged in hypothetical contests with Benny Gantz (34%-26%), Gadi Eisenkot (34%-29%), and Yair Golan (37%-21%). Only former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who is rumored to be planning a political comeback, outperformed Netanyahu by 38% to 31%.
