A Hamas informant may have played a crucial role in Israel’s efforts to target one of the terrorist group’s most elusive leaders.
According to Al Arabiya news, throughout the war, messages are delivered to senior members through couriers to avoid detection by Israeli intelligence. One courier who had been recruited by Israel was instructed to look out for Hamas leader Mohammad Deif, who had managed to survive 7 attempts against his life. Deif was infamous for his role in orchestrating the October 7 massacre and suicide bombings during the 2nd intifada against Israel.
In a rare sighting on July 13, Deif emerged in Gaza’s Khan Younis. While on his way to deliver messages across Hamas terror cells, the courier allegedly spotted Deif and immediately alerted his Israeli contact.
Within minutes, the IDF launched a strike against the notorious terror leader and along with the head of Hamas’s Khan Younis Brigade Rafa’a Salameh. While Israeli intelligence believes Deif was killed, Hamas continues to deny his death.
The informant’s help to Israel did not end there. He also provided information that led to three assassination attempts on the head of Hamas’ Rafah Brigade, Muhammad Shabana. Details about Hamas’ weapons caches and terror tunnel network in Rafah were also handed off to his Israeli handler.
Unfortunately, Hamas quickly found its mole and he is currently under interrogation. Based on Hamas’ abuse towards their Israeli hostages, it’s safe to presume an actual collaborator with Israel is being treated the same if not worse.
As the conflict enters its tenth month, the reported strike has had significant casualties. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry claims over 90 people were killed, while the IDF estimates the death toll in the dozens, insisting that many casualties were terror operatives.
