Israel may be ready to relinquish control of Gaza’s Philadelphi corridor as part of ongoing ceasefire negotiations with Hamas.

According to Reuters, the presence of Israeli troops in the Philadelphi corridor, a critical border zone between Gaza and Egypt, remains a significant obstacle in the negotiations. Hamas has demanded that in order for Israel to get its hostages back the IDF must withdraw from the area.

Israel’s primary concern is that withdrawing its troops from the corridor could enable Hamas to continue smuggling weapons and supplies from Egypt via underground tunnels, effectively allowing the terrorist organization to pose a renewed threat to the Jewish State’s security.

Citing Egyptian sources close to the negotiations, a potential solution to this impasse could be the implementation of an electronic surveillance system. If agreed upon, it might enable Israel to pull back its troops from the border while still maintaining a degree of security oversight.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists that IDF troops will not retreat until all Israel’s military goals are met.

“The prime minister insists that Israel remain on the Philadelphi corridor. He has instructed the negotiating teams accordingly, made this clear to U.S. representatives this week, and updated the Security Cabinet to this effect last night,” a statement by the Prime Minister’s office reads.

Moreover, the involvement of Egypt in these negotiations raises legitimate concerns, given its history of ambivalence towards Israel and its own internal struggles with extremist elements.

Despite also sharing a border with Gaza, Egypt has largely dismissed appeals to provide sanctuary for Arabs fleeing the violence sparked by Hamas’ deadly massacre against Israel on October 7. Various reports claim that Israeli diplomats have tried to rally worldwide support to encourage Egypt to accept Gazan refugees, but these endeavors have largely fallen on deaf ears.

Yes, Hamas will use the corridor to smuggle arms. We saw how electronic surveillance worked for the communities in the Gaxs envelope. They did not !

Israel no debe ceder a las presiones externas que no conocen o no quieren conocer que Egipto es parte del problema. No salir del corredor es garantía para Israel
