Former IDF spokesperson Jonathan Conricus thinks he has some answers. In a recent interview with Eye for Iran, he suggests that high on the IDF’s hit list could be Iran’s air defenses and missile bases. With Iran boasting ballistic missiles capable of reaching targets up to 2,000 kilometers away, neutralizing this threat might be the first step in a multi-staged Israeli attack.

Conricus suggests Israel might also strike symbolic targets such as IRGC headquarters or even Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s official residence in Tehran.
“There’s a lot of targets in Tehran itself, but also all around the country that are symbols of Iran’s military establishment, of the IRGC and of the regime. I don’t think that Israel will strike any religious targets, but I think that they will strike targets that are of significant symbolic value.”
Central to any discussion of Israeli action is the Iranian nuclear threat. While the opportunity for action exists, striking nuclear sites could potentially accelerate Iran’s nuclear program. Conricus acknowledged the complexity of such a decision, noting that the IDF may opt to target 5 locations where weaponization and high-level enrichment are believed to be being conducted.
Of course, Israel doesn’t operate in a vacuum. Last week, President Joe Biden made it clear he won’t support strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites or oil fields, calling instead for a “proportional” response. Still, with the US presidential election fast approaching, Israeli Prime Minister Benajimin Netanyahu could be holding out for a potential power shift in the White House. A Donald Trump return to the presidency might provide the backing Netanyahu needs for a more aggressive approach against Iran.
