Ukraine endured another night of intense aerial assault as Russian forces launched a barrage of Iranian-made Shahed drones at Kyiv and other regions.

Ukrainian air defense forces intercepted just over half of the 116 drones deployed in the Sunday assault, according to military officials. The attack left four dead and 37 wounded, including one child. Kyiv bore the brunt of the damage as debris from roughly ten downed drones scattered across three major districts, destroying buildings and electrical infrastructure.

“Another night, another worry,” said Serhiy Popko, who heads Kyiv’s military administration. “The enemy maintains relentless pressure through air attacks on Ukraine and Kyiv.”

Beyond the Shahed drones, Russia’s arsenal in the attack included an Iskander-M or North Korean KN-23 ballistic missile and two guided aerial missiles.

According to an Atlantic Council analysis, Iran has supplied Russia with between 4,000 and 8,000 drones since 2022, generating substantial revenue despite international sanctions on both countries.

In response to Iran’s widening military exports to Russia, EU officials recently sanctioned fourteen Iranian individuals and organizations linked to both drone and missile transfers.

“This decision follows the indication by the European Council in March 2024 that, were Iran to transfer ballistic missiles and related technology to Russia for use against Ukraine, the EU would be prepared to respond swiftly, including with new and significant restrictive measures,” a statement by the EU council reads.

“The designation includes individuals and entities responsible for the development and transfer of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), missiles and related technology to Russia in support of its war of aggression against Ukraine, and to armed groups and entities undermining peace and security in the Middle East and the Red Sea region.”
