The Israeli Defense Forces have decided to cancel Sunday’s memorial event on Mount Meron due to concerns about potential missile attacks by the Hezbollah terror group. The memorial event to commemorate the birth and death of the biblical figure Moses was expected to draw around 30,000 participants.

IDF Home Front Command Maj. Gen. Rafi Milo stated that holding the event could put lives at risk due to its proximity to the Lebanese border. He also requested that local police enforce the ban and prevent visitors from arriving at the site illegally.

This past week has seen an uptick of violence on Israel’s north border, with Hezbollah firing more than 100 rockets into the region. It was one of the heaviest barrages in the months of cross-border strikes since the Gaza war began on Oct. 7.

A French proposal to end hostilities with Israel and settle border disputes has garnered interest, according to a letter that Retuers obtained from Lebanon’s foreign ministry. The proposal outlines a staged strategy that includes the cessation of military operations, the evacuation of the Hezbollah militia, and the deployment of Lebanese army units in the southern region.
