0 commentsVermont Senator Bernie Sanders is once again doing everything in his power to stop America from helping its closest ally defend herself from a war of annihilation.
On Wednesday, Sanders announced that he is launching an initiative to halt more than $20 billion in weapons transfers to Israel through a series of legislative measures.
“Providing more offensive weapons to continue this disastrous war would be immoral. It would also be illegal,” Sanders wrote to Congress.
“These sales directly contradict the stated purpose of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and the Arms Export Control Act (AECA). These laws require that U.S. arms transfers to foreign countries must be consistent with internationally-recognized human rights, advance U.S. foreign policy interests, and avoid U.S. complicity with any human rights violations.”
Typically, Sanders accused Netanyahu of restricting humanitarian aid to Gaza, leading to what he described as widespread starvation and suffering. He accused Netanyahu of repeatedly sabotaging ceasefire negotiations and hostage release deals, while also expanding settlements in Judea and Samaria.
“Tragically, Prime Minister Netanyahu’s extremist government has not simply waged war against Hamas. It has waged all-out war against the Palestinian people,” he charged. “Israel has conducted this war with little regard for innocent civilians, bombing indiscriminately and severely restricting the humanitarian relief operation.”
Calling on his colleagues to support this effort, Sander’s argued that the US cannot continue to be “complicit in this humanitarian disaster” and referenced an obscure poll showing a majority of American opposing arms sales a Israel.
A vote on Sander’s resolutions can come as early as next week. While he claims to have some backing for his proposal, its passage in the Senate remains doubtful given the divided opinions on the Israel-Hamas war. The prospect of stopping arms sales to Israel faces even greater challenges in the House where Republican lawmakers have largely supported Netanyahu’s war strategy.
This Guy’s in a dream world. Israel uses precision weapons. They announced their intentions until civilians to get out before they do it nobody in the world does that. Such a hypocrite he is.
