The leader of one of America’s largest Hasidic communities has thrown his weight behind Donald Trump’s presidential bid, marking a stark departure from decades of Democratic support.

Rabbi Aharon Teitelbaum, the Satmar Rebbe of Kiryas Joel, announced his endorsement of the former president on Monday following extensive discussions with his followers, according to reports from Arutz 7.

The Rebbe’s endorsement appears driven largely by concerns within the community about what a Kamala Harris presidency could mean for Jewish interests. It carries significant electoral weight, as the Satmar community is known for its ability to deliver bloc votes. To maximize turnout, community leaders are organizing free transportation to polling stations during early voting periods.

Such is the Jewish community’s electoral significance that both party leaders, Speaker Mike Johnson and Hakeem Jeffries, have made recent visits to its leadership. Both sides are also considering calling in former presidents for final campaign stops.

“In a hyper-polarized nation, ultra-Orthodox voters in particular have emerged as the rarest of swing voters. Not particularly partisan, they have fervently supported both former President Donald J. Trump and Democratic politicians, often acting as a bloc,” explains political strategist Nicholas Fandos to The New York Times.

“How they vote in November could tip several of the nation’s marquee House races—possibly in opposite directions.”

Satmar’s second faction, led by Rabbi Zalman Leib Teitelbaum, is expected to follow suit with their own endorsement of the former president.
