Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is demanding the Justice Department investigate the recent arson attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence as an antisemitic hate crime.
In a letter addressed to Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday, Schumer highlighted the troubling circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred just hours after the governor had hosted a Passover celebration.

The attack took place early Sunday morning when 38-year-old Cody Balmer broke into the governor’s residence and set it ablaze using homemade Molotov cocktails. Though no injuries were reported, the fire forced Shapiro and his family to evacuate and left portions of the governor’s residence severely damaged.
While local prosecutors have not yet filed hate crime charges, they have acknowledged that Shapiro’s Jewish faith appears to have factored into the suspect’s actions. According to court documents, he admitted to police that he “harbored hatred” toward Shapiro and stated he would have “beaten him with his hammer” had he encountered the governor inside the residence.
“Our federal authorities must bring the full weight of our civil-rights laws to bear in examining this matter,” Schumer stated in his letter. “No person or public official should be targeted because of their faith, and no community should wonder whether such acts will be met with silence.”
Investigators also revealed that during a subsequent 911 call, Balmer declared that Shapiro needs to know he “will not take part in his plans for what he wants to do to the Palestinian people.”
Balmer has been charged with attempted murder and terrorism, among other offenses. His mother has told authorities that her son suffers from mental illness and had not been taking his prescribed medication.
