This year’s Lag BaOmer celebrations have been moved from the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai at Mt. Meron to the tomb of Shimon Hatzadik in Jerusalem due to security concerns, reports Arutz Sheva.

Traditionally, thousands of Jews gather at Mt. Meron on Lag BaOmer every year to commemorate the anniversary of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s death. However, due to rising tensions with Hezbollah, Israeli authorities have decided to cancel the event at Mt. Meron this year. The alternative Lag BaOmer celebrations will take place at the Jerusalem tomb of Shimon HaTzadik, accompanied by music and guest reception areas.

Shimon HaTzadik was known for his righteousness and his leadership during the Second Temple period. He served as the High Priest and was a member of the Great Assembly, a group of 120 sages who were responsible for the establishment of Jewish law and ethics.

The Talmud (Menachot 109b) relates a story about Shimon HaTzadik’s encounter with Alexander the Great, demonstrating his wisdom and leadership. When Alexander the Great came to Jerusalem, Shimon HaTzadik went out to meet him dressed in his priestly garments. Alexander proceeded to bow before Shimon HaTzadik, relating to his entourage how he would see the revered rabbi’s image in his dreams prior to going out to war.

In addition to the changed venue, the Finance Ministry is reportedly planning to issue a national tender, which will allow religious councils across Israel to submit requests for funding alternative Lag BaOmer events.
