Toronto’s Jewish community is still in shock after a brazen antisemitic attack early Saturday morning, when multiple armed suspects opened fire on the Bais Chaya Mushka school in North York.

The perpetrators reportedly fired on the Jewish school from a dark vehicle just before 5 a.m. before fleeing the scene. Shaken staff discovered evidence of the shooting around 9 a.m. and immediately alerted authorities.

Local law enforcement is still scrambling to secure the area and gather information, while providing additional security at other local Jewish schools and synagogues that could be targeted next.

“I completely understand that this can cause concern, fear, and anxiety in the community, especially when it happens at a school like this,” Inspector Paul Krawczyk told CBC News, acknowledging the sheer horror of the situation.

With the suspects still at large, Krawczyk noted that it’s too early to definitively label the shooting as a hate crime or terrorist act. However, he acknowledged, “We’re not going to ignore the obvious, you know, what occurred here and what the target of the shooting was.”

Miraculously, no injuries have been reported, but the Jewish school’s facade bears the scars of gunfire and antisemitism.
