An armed suspect is in custody after crashing a University of Michigan Rosh Hashanah last last week .

According to police reports, a suspect entered Rabbi Klahr’s Southfield home on Wednesday night, where the rabbi was hosting Jewish students for a Rosh Hashanah dinner. Klahr is employed by Michigan’s Jewish Resource Center, an affiliate of the Orthodox group Olami. Armed with a handgun, he entered the back of the house where he was spotted by a female resident. After pointing the firearm at her and demanding valuables he fled with a purse when alerted to the presence of others in the house.

The suspect, identified as Bryson Bijon Tryce, a Southfield resident with no prior criminal record, is believed to have acted alone. Arrested late Sunday and arraigned on Monday, Tryce is being held on a $750,000 bond. Authorities reportedly used a combination of text messages and security camera footage to identify him.

Coming on the heels of the Jewish New Year and with Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 attack on Israel still fresh in memory, the robbery has struck a raw nerve. It has cast an even harsher spotlight on the University of Michigan, where the victim works, as the school grapples with a surge in antisemitic incidents amid pro-Hamas demonstrations.

Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren addressed these concerns during a press conference on Monday afternoon.

“This incident sparked a lot of concern throughout our community, particularly our Jewish community, definitely due to all the national antisemitic acts that are occurring lately,” he said. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that this is an antisemitic act. However, you never know a person’s true intentions.”

Tryce now faces charges of armed robbery and first-degree home invasion, with authorities considering additional charges. A friend of the suspect has also been charged with obstruction of justice for providing false information about Tryce’s whereabouts during questioning.
