During a medal ceremony at the European Under-23 Fencing Championships in Estonia, controversy erupted when members of Switzerland’s fencing team turned away as Israel’s national anthem, Hatikvah, played in honor of the Israeli team’s gold medal win.

The Swiss team — composed of Ian Hauri, Theo Brochard, Jonathan Fuhrimann, and Sven Vineis — faced sharp criticism for their gesture, which many perceived as a political statement. In response to the backlash, the athletes issued an apology through the Swiss Fencing Federation’s official Instagram page, insisting their actions were not meant to target Israel specifically but were intended to show general solidarity with “victims of war and conflict.” They stressed that they had warmly congratulated the Israeli athletes before and after the ceremony.

Switzerland’s ambassador to Israel, Simon Geissbühler, also formally apologized, denouncing the incident as “inappropriate behavior” and reaffirming that award ceremonies should remain free of political demonstrations. He noted that the act was spontaneous and not coordinated in advance. Swiss Fencing leadership promised to further address the matter once the team returned home.
Israeli officials responded with outrage. Yael Arad, Chairwoman of the Israel Olympic Committee and a prominent figure in the International Olympic Committee, slammed the move as a violation of the spirit of sportsmanship and respect that international competitions demand. She also pointed out the inconsistency of the protest, as Switzerland officially designates Hamas — the group responsible for brutal attacks on Israeli civilians — as a terrorist organization.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called the Swiss team’s actions “disgraceful” and said it had brought shame upon Switzerland.
The incident has reignited debate over whether political gestures have a place in global sports arenas, with many emphasizing the importance of preserving respect and unity among nations, especially during official ceremonies.
Disgusting Swiss team. Antisemitism highlighted no excuse no apology. Let them stick with their heroes the Hamas murderers
It certainly was a political statement and the mere fact they deny this, adds insult to injury!
Truly shameful and disgusting!!
What if the Israeli team turned their backs on the Swiss National Anthem for Swiss collaboration and financing of Hitler and the Nazis…for Swiss banks secretly keeping money in bank accounts held by Jews murdered in the Shoah and lying about it / denying it for decades.
Exactly, Danny! And who knows how many millions they still have, which belong to murdered Jews or deceased Jewish survivors. May those ill-goten gains bring them only misfortune..
We can never over emphasize Switzerland’s complicity and cynical exploitation of Jewish suffering. The very last nation to be sanctimonious with Israel.
in their behaviour you must compare them with rats
This was an act by 4 misguided young men for which they have apologised. I condemn it. But this is far more important https://www.timesofisrael.com/switzerland-announces-its-ban-on-hamas-will-come-into-force-on-may-15/
As a Jew in the Diaspora I want to reinforce the positives from countries and keep this type of gesture in perspective.
Unfortunately, the misguided acts of 8 stupid anti-Semitic athletes publicly displayed and broadcast all over the world is extremely impactful.
Young people don’t read history or unbiased news or have an ounce of critical thinking.
They are influenced by these bozo Jew hating athletes that have celebrity status and influence.
The Nazi’s had Hitler Youth, the Chinese had a youth revolution, the American had Hippie anti-Vietnam college students who changed politics and policy.
Please don’t underestimate and poo-poo the celebrities who seem to be the new intelligentsia of the moron generation.
They need to be stripped of their medals for unsportsmanlike behavior- the truest hallmark of an athlete.
Make it hurt enough and make them the biggest losers and they will learn their lesson.
E depois vem dizer que a Suíça é neutra…
