According to Reuters, sources within Hamas report that Khaled Mashal, head of the organization’s diaspora, is expected to be appointed head of the political bureau, replacing Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated. However, it should be noted that Mashal is not favored by Iran since the Syrian civil war, during which he supported Islamist rebels against Assad, Syria’s ruler and Tehran’s ally.
