President Donald Trump has earned himself a new moniker as the “new Biden” by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) over his unwavering support for Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

“As the minimum death toll in [Gaza] crosses 50,000, the Israeli government is completely out of control because Donald Trump is the new Joe Biden: a president who supports genocide and puts Israel first in violation of federal law and disregard for the wishes of the American people,” CAIR declared in a statement this week.

It’s a strange comparison considering Biden’s lukewarm relationship with Israel. Since returning to the White House, Trump has moved quickly to demonstrate his commitment to the Jewish state, approving heavy bomb shipments that Biden’s administration had withheld on multiple occasions.

Still, CAIR’s statement pulled no punches, demanding Trump force Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “permanently stop his self-serving genocide” They also warned that if Trump wishes to be “remembered as a peacemaker and not Netanyahu’s poodle” then he must act “before the death toll crosses 100,000” in Gaza.

CAIR itself remains a lightning rod for controversy. Named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing case, the group has faced persistent scrutiny over alleged ties to Hamas. According to the Anti-Defamation League, “some of CAIR’s current leadership had early connections with organizations that are or were affiliated with Hamas.”

Perhaps most disturbing were comments from CAIR co-founder Nihad Awad who declared how “happy” he was that Hamas brutally murdered 1,200 Israelis and took hundreds hostage during their rampage on October 7, 2023.

“The people of Gaza only decided to break the siege — the walls of the concentration camp — on Oct. 7,” Awad said during a November CAIR convention in Chicago. “And yes, I was happy to see people breaking the siege and throwing down the shackles of their own land, and walk free into their land, which they were not allowed to walk in.”
