A political ad airing in key battleground states that compares former President Donald Trump to Nazi tyrant Adolf Hitler has come under fire.
Titled “Hate Doesn’t Stop Itself,” the 90-second ad opens with a chilling montage of Hitler and Nazi imagery, as a voiceover declares, “History shows what happens when leaders use hate to consolidate power.” It then cuts to a clip of the former president saying, “I’m going to be a dictator,” before presenting headlines and clips accusing Trump of praising dictators and inciting hatred toward Jews. Finally, it finishes with a call to “stand up to hate and fascism.”
Part of a $1 million ad buy from the Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) targeting Jewish voters this election cycle, the ad is facing pushback from Republicans who are calling it a disgrace.
“This is a disgusting ad, developed by an insignificant organization flailing for relevancy,” said Republican Jewish Coalition leader Sam Markstein. “JDCA should be ashamed and embarrassed for using Hitler imagery and the Holocaust to try to score cheap political points.”
However, JDCA CEO Halie Soifer defended her organization’s actions by claiming that the ad correctly parallels the rise of Trump’s MAGA movement and Nazism.
“Donald Trump is an antisemite. He has repeatedly disparaged the vast majority of American Jews and continues to denigrate millions of Jewish voters,” Soifer said. “He aspires to be a dictator and has echoed Adolf Hitler, whom he reportedly said ‘did some good things.’ He has blatantly refused to condemn white supremacy, aligned with neo-Nazis, and instructed his Christian supporters that they’ll only have to vote this once and never again.”
The JDCA became a political powerhouse following the 2017 neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville. It primarily backs Democratic candidates whose policies align with its predominantly progressive outlook. Key issues the JDCA supports include reproductive rights, firearms regulation, environmental conservation, and equality for the LGBTQ+ community.
