IDF soldiers were killed and 2 soldiers were seriously wounded last month while securing a U.S. humanitarian aid pier off the coast of Gaza, an Israeli military source told JNS.

The IDF announced that Capt. (res.) Eitan Koplovich and Warrant Officer (res.) Elon Waiss were killed while guarding the pier.

The failed project, plagued by technical and logistical issues, is now being decommissioned by the Pentagon.

The source expressed frustration over the unsafe operation, noting that aid could have been delivered through land ports more efficiently. On June 15, an IDF tank hit a large IED near the pier, killing two soldiers and wounding two others. Hamas targeted the tank with explosives.

The pier, initially announced by President Biden, faced significant challenges, including damage from weather and logistical failures. Most of the aid transported was stolen or spoiled. Future aid will now be routed through the port of Ashdod.
