Hopes for a peaceful start to the academic year at the University of British Columbia (UBC) were dashed this week when a pro-Hamas group staged a disturbing antisemitic display on campus grounds.

On Wednesday, members of the self-proclaimed “People’s University for Gaza at UBC” (PUG) approached the private residence of university president Benoit-Antoine Bacon. There, they erected a large banner reading “Pigs off campus” on the double gates leading to his property. Grotesquely, they then impaled a severed pig’s head on one of the gate’s bars.

Not content with their physical display of Jewish hatred, PUG took to Instagram to issue further threats.

“UBC will not know peace until we get Palestine back, piece by piece,” PUG wrote. “Pigs off campus is one of our demands. KKKanada and ‘Isra-hell’ are both shared violent settler colonial projects built on the removal of indigenous peoples from their land with the use of police forces.”

“We remind him this morning and every morning that these tactics do not intimidate us,” the antisemitic organization added. “To all those starting their classes today, we ask you to take more action this year. Find your comrades, wear your keffiyehs every day, learn beyond these classroom walls, and shut this campus down.”

Sadly, this is far from an isolated occurrence at UBC. The Canadian university has seen a disturbing pattern of antisemitic incidents in recent years. Jewish students often come back to their dorm rooms to find their mezuzahs vandalized or stolen. Others are met with neo-Nazi graffiti on their way to classes, all while Hamas symathizers campaign to expel Hillel from campus.
