The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is in financial danger after a series of major donors suspended funding.

“The agency is in mortal danger, it risks being dismantled,” UNRWA Chief Philippe Lazzarini told Swiss broadcaster RTS in an interview broadcast Saturday. “What is at stake is the fate of the Palestinians today in Gaza, who are going through an absolutely unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the short term.”

UNRWA faced a significant financial crisis after several countries halted their contributions due to allegations of UNRWA staff members’ involvement in the Hamas massacre on October 7. Israel accused 12 UNRWA employees of participating in the assault, with audio recordings later implicating two more staff members. In response, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada suspended approximately $450 million in funding to the agency.

Canada plans to reinstate funding in the near future, according to a government official speaking to the Associated Press.
