Tensions are escalating in the Middle East as fears mount over Iran’s anticipated retaliation against Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

In response, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has ordered an additional deployment of a strike group to the region. This includes the deployment of its nuclear-powered Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and a guided missile submarine. The latter is extremely noteworthy considering the US rarely discloses the status and whereabouts of its submarines.

Although the US military had already announced plans earlier this month to deploy additional fighter jets and warships to the region, America’s closest ally is masking sure nothing is being left to chance with intelligence reports pointing to an imminent strike against Israel.

Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran last month has been a flashpoint for the current crisis. Iran has explicitly blamed Israel for the killing, although Israel has not claimed responsibility. Coupled with Israel’s strike in Beirut that killed Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr, this has fueled concerns that the war in Gaza could escalate into a world wide conflict.

Meanwhile, Hamas appears to be pushing back against resuming ceasefire negotiations. This comes despite a recent call by leaders of the US, Egypt, and Qatar for Israel and Hamas to restart talks by Thursday. Israel has indicated its willingness to send negotiators, however since Yahya Sinwar gained the role of Hamas’ political leader, any progress made before has been thrown out the window.

According to the Washington Post, Sinwar wants to go back to terms based on President Joe Biden’s modified framework unveiled last July. Biden’s proposed ceasefire would unfold in three phases, with the first lasting six weeks and including a temporary cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas of Gaza, and the slow release of Israeli hostages, including women, the elderly, and the wounded, in exchange for the release of hundreds of dangerous Arab prisoners.

The second phase would involve a permanent end to the conflict, further Israeli withdrawals, and additional prisoner exchanges, while the third would focus on reconstructing Gaza and returning any remaining hostages alive or dead.

Hamas indicated in a statement on Sunday that its hardline stance was influenced by Israel’s recent attack on a school in Gaza that 19 terrorists were using as a base for their operations.
