President Joe Biden is delivering on his State of the Union address to deliver aid to Gaza by sea.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday that the logistics ship General Frank S. Besson (LSV-1) has left Joint Base Langley-Eustis for the Eastern Mediterranean to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
This deployment comes less than 48 hours after President Biden declared his intention to provide humanitarian assistance through a temporary pier on the Gaza coast.
“Tonight, I’m directing the US military to lead an emergency mission to establish a temporary pier in the Mediterranean on the Gaza coast that can receive large ships carrying food, water, medicine and temporary shelters,” Biden said during Thursday’s State of the Union address.
“This temporary pier would enable a massive increase in the amount of humanitarian assistance getting into Gaza every day,” he added.
CENTCOM’s statement confirms that The Besson is indeed transporting the initial equipment required to set up a temporary pier for delivering humanitarian supplies to Gaza by sea.
