No one saw it coming. Not the 70,000 fans packed into the Superdome, not the millions watching at Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show, and certainly not the NFL executives who had vetted their 400-person field cast.

A man dressed identically to the other performers vaulted onto the GNX car at the heart of Lamar’s set. Security personnel finally tackled the protester as Samuel L. Jackson and SZA took their planned positions alongside Lamar to continue as if nothing had happened.

President Donald Trump sat in the VIP section, his presence already historic as the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl. Just days earlier, he’d stood beside Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, proposing to take over Gaza and relocate its Arab population.

In a statement, the league confirmed the person was part of the on-field cast and will be banned from all NFL stadiums and events. Meanwhile, the New Orleans Police Department has since launched an investigation and is working to determine any applicable charges.
