European Union (EU) leaders met on Wednesday to approve sanctions against Iran after the Islamic Republic’s unprecedented attack on the Jewish State.

According to Reuters, the new sanctions will directly target companies involved in producing the weapons used in the attack. Beyond approving sanctions and reaffirming support for Israel’s security, EU leaders also called for de-escalation from all sides to prevent more tensions in the region.

The emergency summit in Brussels, bringing together all 27 national leaders, occurred just days after Iran unleashed a barrage of suicide drones and ballistic missiles into Israeli territory during its ongoing conflict with Hamas. Israel has been battling Hamas, the Iranian-backed Palestinian faction, since last October before the weekend’s Iranian missile strikes dramatically raised regional stakes.

“We feel it’s very important to do everything to isolate Iran,” said EU Chairman Charles Michel, as quoted by Reuters.

Meanwhile, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan announced Tuesday evening that the Biden Administration is seeking to impose sanctions on Iran’s Defense Ministry and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). According to Sulivan, the White House is working in coordination with bipartisan leaders in Congress and international partners, including G7 nations, on a joint comprehensive response to Iran’s unprecedented attack.
