A man shouting a Jewish slur attacked the resident of a New York City Jewish nursing home after trying to rob him.

The alleged attacker, Alen Califano, 41, of Yonkers, New York, was allowed in the New Jewish Home in the Bronx on Saturday afternoon after telling the security guard he needed to use the bathroom.

But Califano entered the room of a resident, where he lit a marijuana cigarette and trashed the room, according to the New York Post. He then entered the room of an 84-year-old Jewish man and demanded his money before hitting him with a fire extinguisher. He also shouted, “I’m going to kill you, you mother f***ing Jew,” according to the report.

Califano then hit the victim with a cardboard tube, causing cuts to his face and head, he then picked up a fire extinguisher and threw it at the 84-year-old man.

Califano then went to the lobby, where he was confronted by police and arrested, sources said. Police took a collapsible baton from his pocket in the lobby.

Califano was charged with robbery, burglary, a hate crime, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and possession of marijuana, police told WNBC TV.

The nursing home fired the security guard, who was recently hired.

The assisted living facility released the following statement:

“There is nothing more important than the health and safety of our residents. This isolated incident is the result of an unacceptable breach of protocol committed by a guard employed by the private firm contracted to provide security at this assisted living facility. The guard was fired immediately. And we have demanded, by Monday morning, an incident report and remedial action plan from the company. The University Avenue Assisted Living staff responded quickly and immediately contacted law enforcement. We are fully cooperating with the NYPD,” director of University Avenue Assisted Living.

The suspect has an extensive record dating back to 1992, sources said.
