Report: Israel ‘Unlikely’ to Carry Out Retaliatory Strike on Iran Until After Passover

Israel is unlikely to carry out a retaliatory strike on Iran until after Passover.

ABC News reports, citing US and Israeli officials, that Israel was ready to strike back at Iran on two different occasions this week but decided to postpone until after Passover. Nevertheless, Iran is still on a “high state of alert,” with some of its leadership hiding in “safe houses and underground facilities,” as Israel could change its mind at any time and decide to strike back during the weeklong Jewish holiday.

Meanwhile, internal pressure from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government is mounting to strike immediately.

“Israel’s response must not be a scarecrow, in the style of the dune bombings we saw in previous years in Gaza,” said National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir in a video statement following the Iranian attack on Saturday. “The concepts of restraint and proportionality are concepts that passed away on October 7.”

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich echoed the same sentiment the following day as Ben Gvir by warning that the “eyes of the entire world” are now on Israel.

“The eyes of the entire Middle East and the entire world are on the State of Israel. If our response resonates throughout the Middle East for generations to come — we will win,” he said. “If we hesitate, God forbid, we will put ourselves and our children in immediate existential danger.”

Any strike against Iran would require the approval of Israel’s war cabinet that consists of whose only voting members are Netanyahu, Minister Benny Gantz, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
