Alek Minassian, 25, has been identified as the man who mowed down pedestrians while driving a white Ryder van in Toronto this afternoon. Minassian, who is of Armenian descent, killed nine people and injured many more.
When police approached him after he fled the scene, he came near them with what appeared to be a firearm in his hand.

Toronto Police are saying that the act was deliberate, but they do not have a motive and are not ruling our terrorism.
The attack occurs as Cabinet ministers from the major industrial countries are gathering in Canada to discuss a range of international issues in the run-up to the G7 meeting near Quebec City.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his sympathies for those involved. “Our hearts go out to everyone affected,” Trudeau said in Ottawa. “We are going to have more to learn and more to say in the coming hours.”
