Watch: Neighbor Caught Drawing Swastika on Jewish Family’s Groceries

In a now-viral video, a Jewish mother in West Hollywood, California, was subjected to an act of antisemitism when her neighbor was caught on her front porch camera drawing a swastika on her grocery bags.

The incident took place in December and was captured on a front porch camera of homeowner Leah Grossman. It shows Mark Nakagawa, a retired pastor, scribbling on a box of seltzer sitting on the doorstep. When confronted, Nakagawa initially denied knowing what the symbol he drew was or why he did it.

The confrontation reportedly stemmed from a homeowner’s association meeting where, following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack, Grossman had hung the Israeli flag on her balcony. This act led Nakagawa to call her a “fascist.”

Nakagawa later admitted to the local news outlet KAL that he had drawn the swastika, claiming he was trying to educate Grossman about the history of the swastika as a Buddhist symbol of love. He acknowledged in hindsight that his approach was misguided and showed poor judgment.

The United Methodist Church, where Nakagawa served as West District Superintendent from July 2016 to July 2023, released a statement expressing regret over the incident involving its former employee and stated it does not condone any form of hatred or discrimination.
