A United States initiative to build a humanitarian aid pier off the coast of Gaza will cost approximately $320 million.

CNN reports, citing a senior Pentagon official, that the project’s costs nearly doubled from initial estimates due to the complex logistics and security challenges involved in constructing and operating the temporary pier in the war-torn region.

The humanitarian pier is expected to be operational by the start of May, with initial deliveries equivalent to 90 trucks per day of aid to be increased to 150 trucks daily once the facility reaches total capacity, according to the source.

During the first days of operations, the US military will reportedly partner with the Israel Defense Forces to anchor the causeway to the shore in Gaza. Both armies will manage the facility for at least three months before transitioning it into a full-time commercial operation that other countries and non-governmental organizations can use.

On Tuesday, the United States Central Command shared images showcasing the ongoing construction of the floating pier, known as Joint Logistics Over the Shore (JLOTS). In the photos, military personnel are seen assembling different components of the pier aboard ships as they make their way to Gaza.
