The fire on East 14th Street in Sheepshead Bay was discovered and called in at around 2:00 a.m. Two teen boys managed to jump from a second floor in the house. The others escaped through a side door. The entire house was engulfed in flames and burned through the second floor and the attic

Firefighters reportedly arrived at the home in less than two and a half minutes from when the call came in. Five firefighters also were injured while battling the blaze.

The family is the Azan family, originally from Israel. The father was identified as Yossi Azan, 45, who the website said worked at the Hat Box on Coney Island Avenue for many years.

Azan is being described as a hero today by FDNY commissioner Daniel Nigro, who spoke about his heroic actions that saved two of his children.

“He was able to get out of the 2nd floor, he was severely burned, he tried to get back in to save the rest of his family, the ones that he didn’t already save, we believe he acted very courageously and tried desperately and hopefully it didn’t cost his life also,” Fire commissioner Nigro said. Nigro added that it appears that the smoke detectors were functioning when the fire was blazing. The beeping from the smoke detectors managed to wake up the two teens who managed to escape by jumping from the second floor.

In 2015, Yosi Azan posted in disbelief about news of the tragic Sassoon family fire.

“I know the family. It is something that is so hard to comprehend. Three of the kids were classmates with my kids.” Azan posted.

The news website Yeshiva World News, is citing what it called “highly credible sources” confirming that the FDNY is investigating the blaze as being started by the family’s Hanukkah menorah.
