0 commentsThe United Arab Emirates (UAE) has suspended coordination of humanitarian aid with Israel after an errant airstrike killed seven aid workers from the World Central Kitchen (WCK) in Gaza earlier this week.
As per, i24 News, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the decision after expressing “outrage” over the tragedy to Israeli envoy Amir Hayek.
In efforts to resolve the crisis, Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, engaged in a phone conversation with his UAE counterpart, Abdullah bin Zayed. Additionally, Israel’s Foreign Ministry held a meeting with the UAE Ambassador, Mohammed Mahmoud Al-Khaja, with the goal of finding a diplomatic solution, as noted in the report.
On Tuesday, a WCK convoy was attacked after leaving a warehouse in Gaza’s Deir al-Balah neighborhood, where they had been unloading humanitarian aid. WCK announced a temporary pause in its operations following the attack, calling it “unforgivable” and a strike against humanitarian organizations at large.
Israel has taken significant international heat over the strike that killed multiple foreign nationals, including a dual US-Canadian citizen.
US President Joe Biden expressed being “heartbroken” during a call to Jose Andres, who heads the WCK. The UK summoned its Israeli ambassador to express its “unequivocal condemnation” of the airstrike. Similarly, the French Minister for Foreign Affairs, Stephane Sejourne, stated that “nothing justifies such a tragedy” and underscored the imperative of protecting humanitarian workers as a “moral and lawful imperative.”
