Saudi Arabia expressed strong support for the Palestinian Authority during a meeting between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and PA President Mahmoud Abbas in Riyadh, reports Wafa.

During the meeting, Salman reaffirmed his unwavering support for the Palestinians in their pursuit of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He also pledged that Saudi Arabia would continue working towards a ceasefire in Gaza and help facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, according to the Arabic news agency.

Prior to the outbreak of the Gaza war, Israel and Saudi Arabia were closer than ever to reaching a historic normalization agreement.

In an interview aired on CNN just two weeks before October 7, Salman alluded to ongoing mediated talks between the United States, which included the normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. During the interview, he expressed that the likelihood of such an agreement seemed to be “serious for the first time.”

A White House memo in late October confirmed that the Saudi Prince agreed to continue “building on the work that was already underway” after the war in Gaza ends.

Whether Saudi Arabia will continue insisting on the creation of a Palestinian State as part of a future agreement with Israel remains to be seen.
