US Vice President Kamala Harris has warned Israel of the consequences if it launches a major attack on the Gazan city of Rafah.
We have been clear in multiple conversations and in every way that any major military operation in Rafah would be a huge mistake,” Vice President Harris told ABC News.
“Let me tell you something: I have studied the maps. There’s nowhere for those folks to go. And we’re looking at about a million and a half people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them,” she said.
On being asked whether there would be consequences if Israel did go ahead with the planned offensive, Harris said, “I am ruling out nothing.”
Harris’ remarks echo Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent remarks during a visit to the region, where he warned that Israel risked global isolation if it attacked Rafah.
“We share Israel’s goal of defeating Hamas,” he said. “Though a major military ground operation in Rafah is not the way to do it, it risks killing more civilians; it risks wreaking greater havoc with the provision of humanitarian assistance; it risks further isolating Israel around the world and jeopardizing its long-term security and standing.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly already given the green light on the military’s strategy for the offensive, which includes relocating civilians to areas north of Rafah beforehand. In the ongoing war with Hamas following a massacre of 1,200 Jews in southern Israel on Oct. 7, an estimated 1.3 million Arabs are currently seeking refuge in Rafah following military evacuation alerts from northern Gaza and various other areas within the enclave.
