Jews are the most targeted group for hate crimes in the Canadian city of Toronto, data collected by the Toronto Police Department reveals.
The police study reveals that since Oct. 7, there has been a 93% increase in hate crimes in Toronto compared to the same time frame in the previous year. Out of the 84 hate crimes reported in Canada’s largest city in 2024, 56% were aimed at the Jewish community, marking February as the month with the highest rate of antisemitic incidents in the past three years.
“To no one’s surprise, the Jewish community continues to see a serious increase in antisemitic incidents in the aftermath of October 7,” said Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) CEO Michael Levitt.
“Sadly, this scourge isn’t limited to Toronto but is also evident in other Canadian cities. Most disturbingly, hate and intimidation targeting the Jewish community are becoming increasingly normalized and widespread—online, on our streets, and in our own backyard.”
These alarming figures emerge even though Jews account for just 3.5% of Toronto’s total population of 2.795 million.
