US President Joe Biden issued an ultimatum to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demanding an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza during a call on Thursday evening.

“He [Biden] underscored that an immediate ceasefire is essential to stabilize and improve the humanitarian situation and protect innocent civilians, and he urged the prime minister to empower his negotiators to conclude a deal without delay to bring the hostages home,” a White House readout of their call stated.

“President Biden emphasized that the strikes on humanitarian workers and the overall humanitarian situation are unacceptable. He made clear the need for Israel to announce and implement a series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers,” the statement added.

Biden also warned Netanyahu that US policy towards the Gaza conflict hinges on Israel’s willingness to take “immediate action” to increase aid in the enclave.

Following the discussion, White House spokesperson John Kirby outlined expectations for Israel, including increased aid access to Gaza, additional crossing openings, “movement towards a ceasefire,” and enhanced protection for civilians and aid personnel.

“We want to see some real changes on the Israeli side.” If that doesn’t happen, “there’ll have to be changes from our side,” warned Kirby.

This latest bout with Israel’s premier comes following the tragic deaths of seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers in the Gaza Strip caused by an errant Israeli air strike this week, which led Biden to call for an independent investigation.
