The United States Treasury is preparing to sanction Iran following its deadly missile attack on Israel this weekend.
“The Treasury will not hesitate to work with our allies to use our sanctions authority to continue disrupting the Iranian regime’s malign and destabilizing activity,” US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement, as quoted by Axios.
“The attack by Iran and its proxies underscores the importance of Treasury’s work to use our economic tools to counter Iran’s malign activity,” she said.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Israel Katz has been busy urging the world to impose sanctions on the Islamic Republic and recognize it as a terror state.
“This morning I sent letters to 32 countries and spoke with dozens of foreign ministers and leading figures around the world, calling for sanctions to be imposed on the Iranian missile project and that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps be declared a terrorist organization as a way to curb and weaken Iran,” Katz wrote in a post on X.
“Iran must be stopped now, before it is too late,” he added.
The last time the US imposed sanctions on Iran was in February with regards to six Iranian officials responsible for cyberattacks in the US and other countries. In January, the US and UK announced sanctions on a network that included Iranian officials and criminal gangs linked to assassination plots against Iranian opposition activists abroad. Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security reportedly directed this terror network.
